James victor grady

1897-1918

James Victor Grady, was born in Peterborough Ontario, on July 25th 1897. He was the next kin of Annie and James Grady. They lived on 81 Smith Street, Peterborough Ontario. His mother was born in the year 1857 and lived until 1934. She died at the age of 77. His father was born in the year of 1857 and died in 1909. His father died when he was 52 and his son was just 12. James had an older sister named Loretta. She was born in 1889 and died in 1976. She died at the age of 87. For 9 years, Annie Grady was a single mother of 2 until Grady was conscripted into the war. 

 

Grady was 5 feet 7 inches. He had brown hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion. When he enlisted in the war, he had a scar on his right abdomen. Before the war, he was not married and he worked as a telegraph operator. His religion was Roan Catholic. He was buried in Peterborough R.C. Cemetery.  James had no previous military experience and he won no medals.

 

Grady enlisted in May 6th 1918 in Peterborough Ontario. He enlisted in the war during the Hundred Days Campaign. He was a gunner with the Canadian Field Artillery and the 75th deport battery. Grady was in the 1st Deport Battalion but he got transferred on May 20th, 1918. Grady fought in the war for 6 months. On October 10th, 1918, James got transferred to a hospital in Halifax. It took him 3 days to get here. He arrived on October 6th, 1918.

 

He went to the hospital for a bad cold and it gradually got worse. Grady has severe headaches, something all over his body, slightly dizzy, his temperature was 102.5, he was sweating and slightly drowsy. His heart action was normal. He was hearing things and something on his body was the size of a teacup. Between the 6th and the 14th, his cold turned into influenza and then pneumonia. He died on October 14th, 1918 at 8 am.
